Is That It?

It's depressing to see how little support the seemingly popular village Gala has. Not many come to our fundraisers, very few offer to help us set things up. And, now we we need a new team, it seems like nobody wants to do it. We warned everyone via the Village Link that the Gala was  in danger of closing due to lack of support. We had a well publicised AGM but, again, had really poor support.
So why continue?
It's a good question. I've been on the Committee for 5 years and have really enjoyed it. I know that all the kids enjoy it. I know that most adults enjoy it. So why will it stop? Apathy? Lethargy, commitment worries?

I don't even know if anyone reads this any more. Still, the Gala has one more chance of survival. One more glimmer of hope. If you want a Gala, then come to the next meeting at the Gellet Hall on Nov 29th at 19:30. Put your name forward and join the Committee. Or else no more Gala day, Raft Race, Pet Show or Fancy Dress. And who will you have to blame? Think about it!

Gala 2012 AGM

As promised, we have the AGM date finalised!

It'll be at The Gellet Hall on 6th November at 19:30.

Do come along if you've anything to contribute to the meeting. We're always looking for new members to join us to make it smoother for us all. Remember that the more of us there are, the less we each have to do! If you've got young kids, then think what you could do to give your kids (and other kids) a great gala time. In the old days, the gala was on one day, now it's on for around three weekends!

Limekilns / Charlestown Gala Debate

Since the flyer re: the Gala being permanently based in Charlestown went out, I've had lots of feedback from many people, angry and upset of this decision. I've tried explaining the reasons why, and have had understanding from some, and had backs turned against me by others.  I've also had comments such as: the Gala is too samey, the Gala is too different from the old days, the Gala is too commercial. I think some people forget that there are only 7 of us on the Committee. We don't get much assistance or volunteers, we have falling attendances at our fundraising events. It's not easy as we're fighting against TV, internet and a general lack of enthusiasm. On top of all that, we're all volunteers!

One of the main principals of the Gala is that it should be free for kids. we still maintain that. All the bouncy things, zorbz, animal man and circus shows, Raft race face painting, pottery etc was free. Only buying food, drink or things from the craft tents cost money, and that was up to the individual.  Here's my response to someone who asked why the Gala was to stay in Charlestown. I thought I'd publish it here so you could all see the full picture of what the Gala Committee is up against.

As Gala Chairman, I'll go through the main reasons of our idea of only having at Charlestown Green. By putting it here will give others some clarification of all the reasons why. Here goes: The nearest toilets for the public
are at The Ship Inn (Charlestown have their own, plus The Elgin Hotel - which offers it's toilets to the general public) There is limited parking for families at Limekilns. Access for vehicles is difficult being a 'one way in / out' over grass. Drainage is poor and the possibility of being stuck in the mud (the often used football pitch) is high after rain. The main advantage of Charlestown is that it has a road all the way around it, allowing access for all vehicles servicing the Gala with a queuing system. You are probably aware over the past few years the Gala has become a bigger event and it takes some traffic to make it happen.

The other batch of reasons is because of the Gala Committee logistics. Nearly all of the items needed for Gala Day are either locked in double garage in Charlestown or are in the Queens Hall. For Gala Day, we typically need 4 marquees, bar, bbq, all the prizes, medals, tug of war rope, steel pins and red tape as well as around 60 chairs, 22 6ft tables and 12 square tables from the QH. Apart from getting all that to the venue, we also have to get it all set up. What we have done in the past is set up the marquees on the Friday evening to make it easier on the Saturday morning. Limekilns normally have the football match on the Friday night - would it go down well if it was on a Thursday? It's still a rush to get it all done for 12:00, but we manage to get it all done in time. We usually use my, and the Gala Secretary's, vans for the carting of the bits and pieces.

So what's the problem, you may ask? Why not hire another van? The basic answer is because there are only 7 of us on the Committee, and we can't drive, collect and deliver, set up and organise everything. There are only two men on the Committee too, and some of the ladies aren't physically strong enough to do some of the jobs. If we had our teams stuck in a vans driving between Charlestown and Limekilns repeatedly, we'd run out of time. We ask for helpers on our facebook page and on our notice boards but only get a few people turning up. Normally it's the families of Committee members that join in. If we had more help, then we'd probably reconsider. The issue we have is that everyone wants a Gala, but very few offer to help. We've tried many different ways to raise money with fundraising events throughout the year, but it seems like not many people come to them. To get more revenue we have to think of other ways, and one example of this is the craft tents. We charge the exhibitors a fee to have a table, and this goes into next year's pot. The craft marquees also give something for the adults to peruse if they want. It does, however mean two marquees, tables and chairs that add to our list!

If you'd like to come to our AGM and discuss these points, join us as a Committee member, or volunteer your services so we aren't continually running on empty, please watch out for the signs saying when it is. The Gala can only survive if those who do it are supported all year round. Not only on Gala Day.

Alex Hill

Gala Chairman.

Last thing for this years' Gala

The raft race is on Saturday at 15:00. We'll have a bar selling between 12-3pm and will have vegetable or beef chilli served with nachos, chillis, cheese and salsa sauce. The weather forecast is good (so far) and, fingers crossed, the sun will be shining! In the evening, the Ship Inn will have live bands and a BBQ (at 7pm). It would be great to see all the villagers out in force to support this event. We have over 10 rafts taking part, by my estimate, so do pop by and cheer them along!

Gala Day all done!

The Charlestown, Limekilns & Pattiesmuir Gala was held on Saturday with the emphasis on fitness, bringing the Gala-lympics to Fife. The weather couldn't have been better, and over 400 people packed the green to enjoy the many events that were on show. Local fitness group, The Spartans Display Team, wowed the crowd with an amazing acrobatic show which had the crowds enthralled. The Assault course, races, Zorbs, inflatables, zumba & circus tent kept up the activity based theme, whilst the SWRVS Tea tent, animal show, food stalls, beer tent and huge craft marquees offered gentle tranquility to those after a relaxing time. Gala Chairman, Alex Hill, said ' It's down to the hard working Gala team, volunteers and the great variety of locally based entertainers that can give the audience a brilliant mix of fun, entertainment and value for money. The only problem is how to beat it next year!'

Nearly Ready!

We're putting all the finishing touches to the Gala now. The posters will be out soon, and  we really hope that there will be something for everyone. We'd really like volunteers on the Friday 10th at around 6pm to help us set up the marquees at Charlestown Green, and also on the Sat at 09:00 and 16:00. The Gala Committee only has a few members and family too, so the more the quicker and better - please! If you have any questions or points, do call me on  872 306 or 07767 011 588 or email on lcpgala@live.co.uk. If you want to post anonymously as you want to be 'hidden', you can always do it here!

Oddly enough, we will have 4 events in Limekilns and 3 in Charlestown. How's that for sharing villages!

All coming together!

The Gala Committee have been working hard to get this year's Gala events together and so far we're coming along quite nicely!  Janice is our star Fancy Dress Judge this year, so make sure that your kids are well turned out!...Ryan & Calder will be loaning their great Dog Agility equipment for our Child Agility Contest....Sara has bought two pop - up gazebos for our Gala stock...We will have two marquees' worth of Crafts and Goodies this year... We have enrolled Karl Pearson and Ben Gray to assist in the burger tent...We'll also have another hot food stall, so it won't all be BBQ'd food...Zumba Kat is getting her team ready for a great demo on gala Day...We'll have a man with exotic animals and beasts on Gala Day (tigers, a walrus and a giraffe...not really)...The Pirate Raft Race is getting loads of interest...I think we'll have at least 15 rafts invloved. The Race should be in The Press and Courier in the next few weeks! Why not get your company to sponsor a raft, or get the family , neighbours involved? It's all about joining in! The Ship Inn will have bands on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with a BBQ on the Saturday night!

On the tidying up side...We've still not heard from many who want to go to Fordell Firs... We'd really appreciate some volunteers on Gala Day itself as well as on the Friday evening (10th) to help put up the marquees... We're looking for some unplugged musicians to play between 12- 3pm on the prom at the raft race...We won't have a kids' craft tent this year...

All in all, this year's Gala should be the best ever - with the emphasis on sport and fitness. Watch out Dads...there's something for you to get involeved in too - and it's not only the beer tent!

Timbershack

Another Sponsor! The medals for the football matches and races will be sponsored by local printing / logo / embroidery company, Timbershack. We'd like to thank them for this kind offer! Just to be topical, the medal ribbons have the Olympic colours on them!

The Kilns

The Kilns have kindly offered to sponsor the children's races on Gala Day. It's a very kind offer, and we'll certainly take them up on it! Thank you!

Door to Door Collection

Thank you to all the generous people of the villages who donated in our door to door collection. Foul weather didn't put off the Gala Committee who used phrases like 'It's for the kids', 'I can see you hiding behind the sofa', and 'Goodness, that's most kind of you' after pressing the doorbells of so many houses. Special thanks must also go to Barbara of Pattiesmuir who helped us too. We raised over £1,200 in total, and thanks to this, our fife Council grant, sponsors and those who supported our fund raisers throughout the year, we can say that this years' Gala will be another great success.

Cheese & Wine Evening

Hope Cottage is still work in progress, but I've had a peek inside and it's looking fantastic! The Gala plan of having a 'Cheese 'n' Wine' evening on a Friday soon will coming to fruition soon.  It'll give you a chance to take a look at this wonderful new eatery, have a wee glass and nibble, as well as get out of your houses! Community - it's what the Gala is all about! We'd like to thank Mike Graham for offering his venue to the Gala, and we wish him and Sandra all the best in their new venture. Date to follow - hopefully on a nice notice board or two!

Raft Race

To make things more standard, the Gala Raft race will become a Pirate Raft Race - This year sponsored by McKissocks @ Homestyle. We're hoping to have rafts from companies and individuals outside of our villages to make it more of an event. We had 11 last year, let's see what we can do. Please spread the word!

This year's Sporty Feel Gala Day

Gala Day will have ZumbaKat doing Zumba displays, Tommy Lawrence's Assault Course, as well as The Spartans Athletic Dispaly team. I think we might just rival the Olympics! We will also have some brand new inflatables etc from Bedlam, as well as a choice of food. On the evening of Gala Day there will be a 'You Pay, I Play' Jukebox at The Ship Inn, so make sure you're not too tired from all this to do some dancing!

Fancy Dress

Thanks to Mike Graham, of the opening shortly Hope Cottage Cafe for offering ice creams to all the kids who are taking part in the Gala Fancy Dress Competition this year. It'll be a great place to stop after the march around the village!

Door to door Collection

That's the Gala all coming to plan now! Thanks to all those who contributed to the recent door-to-door collections - especially those collectors who went out in the foul weather! We still have tins in The Kilns and Sutlery for a few more days, but we have over £1,200 in the pot!

Gala Golf Day

Thanks to all those that supported our Gala Golf Tournament at the Pitliver estate. It was very kind of the owners to let us use it and very kind of all those that came along for a great day out.

Raft Race

This year's Raft race will be at 3pm on the 18th August. We're happy to announce that McKissocks (Carpet and rug Retailers of the highest order) have offered to sponsor it, which is jolly nice. I plan to advertise and promote it as much as possible and am looking for at least 15 rafts to take part in it this year.  If you'd like to build a raft and join in, I'll be getting barrels from Mason's Mortar at Charlestown later in the year as they have loads! You just need to have life jackets, paddles and the wood, rope etc to put the raft together. It's as simple as that! Company teams, groups and individuals are all invited.  In the evening there will be live bands playing at least one local pub if you want to make a day of it!

Newsletter and tin rattling

Between today and the 16th June the whole area will have Gala members knocking at your door. This will be to give out our newsletter -  yes,  I realise the one that I've posted here isn't big enough to read!  We'll also be collecting for the Gala too, so please give generously!

Golf Sunday!

Next event we have is a Golf day this coming Sunday at Pitliver. It's sold out already - in three days! We have 36 players who'll have bacon rolls and coffee before they start and prizes along the way!

Quiz and The Spring Ball

Since I last posted on the blog in February the Gala has been quite busy with fund raising activities. We had a Quiz at the Scout Hall in March which raised nearly £300. On May 8th we had our first big style event, The Spring BAll. Over 140 people dressed up and came to the Carnegie Conference Centre for a night of fine food and wine, dancing and fun. With two bands and a disco, we kept everyone amused until the end. Most said it ended too soon! We had a huge prize draw and  auction with prizes donated by loads of generous companies and individuals. We made over £2000 profit and gave the School £420 to help them towards their monetary goal in their centenary year! We've asked to do another next year already, but we'll see how it goes as you don't want too much of a good thing!

Fill in the blanks!

If you're bored or are a studious sort, please get tagging all the pictures that are now on the new Gala Facebook page.
We've a new Facebook page too. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Limekilns-Charlestown-Pattiesmuir-Gala-Committee/307897975937003   Please pass this around, and send us any pictures from Gala Events from the past!
We've noticed that we are not the only fundraising bunch in the villages this year. The Primary School is 100 years old and are raising money for a whole host of things to mark the occasion. We think that this is great and would like to help. Being an ex chairman of The School Association in the distant past, I realise how difficult it is to get those badly needed funds, so helping them makes sense to me! We're giving the School 20% of all seat sales at our Spring ball on 5th May. See the attached poster for details. If you need tickets, do let us know!

We are on the CLPC website!

Hello! We're now a blog on the CLPC website as well as on Facebook, so you can't escape us! Here's our next fund raiser for the Gala this year. Click on the poster to see it more clearly!
